Here's a revised version that includes the safety and longevity aspect, while being careful not to overstate the claim (since no material can completely eliminate the risk).

Why We Use PETG Instead of PLA

Our grinder modification is 3D printed using premium PETG filament, rather than the more commonly used PLA. While both materials are widely used in 3D printing, PETG is far better suited for components installed inside a coffee grinder such as the DF64 Gen 1, where durability and long-term reliability are essential.

Advantages of PETG over PLA

✓ Superior Heat Resistance

Coffee grinders generate heat during extended grinding sessions, particularly around the burr chamber and motor. PETG retains its shape and mechanical strength at higher temperatures, whereas PLA can gradually soften or deform over time.

✓ Longer Service Life

PLA naturally becomes more brittle as it ages, especially when exposed to repeated temperature changes, humidity, and UV light. Over time, this can lead to cracking or breakage. PETG remains tough and resilient, providing a much longer-lasting solution.

✓ Better Impact Resistance

PETG is more resistant to impact and mechanical stress. Whether you're cleaning, servicing, or reinstalling your grinder, PETG is far less likely to crack or chip compared to PLA.

✓ Improved Wear & Fatigue Resistance

Inside a coffee grinder, components are constantly subjected to vibration and repeated use. PETG offers superior fatigue resistance, helping it maintain its shape and function over thousands of grinding cycles.

✓ Better Moisture Resistance

PETG absorbs less moisture than PLA, making it more dimensionally stable in humid coffee environments and less susceptible to degradation over time.

✓ Reduced Risk of Material Failure Near Your Coffee

One of the biggest concerns with PLA is that, as it ages, it can become brittle and eventually crack or shed small fragments. If a printed component inside the grinder were to fail, there is a possibility that broken plastic pieces could enter the grinding chamber and mix with the coffee beans before being expelled.

By choosing PETG, the likelihood of this type of failure is significantly reduced. Its higher toughness and resistance to cracking help ensure the modification remains structurally sound for much longer, providing greater peace of mind during everyday use.

While no 3D-printed material is completely immune to wear or damage, PETG offers a substantially more durable and reliable solution than PLA for this application.

Built for the DF64 Gen 1

This modification has been specifically designed for the DF64 Gen 1, offering a more robust alternative to many aftermarket PLA-printed parts.

Although PLA is cheaper and easier to print, we believe internal grinder components should be engineered for durability, reliability, and longevity. PETG provides the toughness and stability needed for a component that is expected to perform consistently for years.

Why it Matters

  • ✔ Superior heat resistance

  • ✔ Much less prone to becoming brittle over time

  • ✔ Higher impact and fatigue resistance

  • ✔ Better dimensional stability

  • ✔ Longer service life

  • ✔ Lower likelihood of plastic fragments entering the grinding chamber due to material failure

  • ✔ Designed for years of reliable daily use

At ASK Coffee Roastery & Speedy3D Creations, we believe every modification should improve not just performance, but also long-term reliability. That's why we print our DF64 Gen 1 upgrades in PETG—not PLA.
